PRESS: Connection operators enter boosting market of thermal cams

MOSCOW, Apr 29 (PRIME) -- Russian connection operators, including Rostelecom and ER-Telecom, have started to sell thermal cameras to their corporate clients, and the market could reach hundreds of millions of U.S. dollars and would grow even after the pandemic, business daily Kommersant reported on Wednesday.

State-controlled Rostelecom unveiled a solution to take a body temperature in a crowd of people. The equipment can scan 30 people at a time at the distance of up to eight meters.

A Rostelecom official said the company had already installed 160 such systems at customers’ in different industries. The solution is based on Rostelecom’s cloud platform and the technologies the operator used for video monitoring at the 2012 elections.

ER-Telecom designed a similar solution, which can take temperature of 40 people at a time.

MegaFon also offers thermal cameras to corporate clients as a part of video analytics, and the system can be combined with metal detectors for railway stations, airports, and sports facilities.

Vitaly Shub, deputy head of the center of excellence at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech), estimated the price of such a system at about U.S. $10,000.

A telecom source said owning the system will cost a client 1–1.3 million rubles for 12 months.
